We Survived A Hurricane!!

Yep. We survived a hurricane. In our first week of living in our new house.

The day before all of the craziness started, a few of our co-workers warned us about all of the crazy expected winds (because we never watch the news and we have no idea what is going on in the world). We thought about taking in our lighted reindeer in the front yard, but were pretty sure that they were anchored in tightly and would survive the wind. We weren't worried about it at all.

We should have been.

The wind was more than crazy. I've never seen anything like it in my life.

We started hearing it in the middle of the night, but were so groggy that it didn't keep us up much. I did tell Dave that I thought he should go bring in his deer and make sure that our big garbage cans were okay outside. So, he went outside in his robe (I wish I could have seen it!), and he got blown all over the place! Luckily, he got the deer inside, and then the rest of the night we didn't sleep very well. There were a few gusts of wind that we thought were for sure going to break our windows. It kept getting worse as it got later into the morning. We finally got up just because we couldn't really sleep anymore and got ready for the day. While we were eating breakfast, our power went out (about 6:30 a.m.). We finished getting ready and went out to the garage to get our car out. Of course the power was out, so we had to manually open the door and get the car out. Then, the wind kept blowing open the garage door, so we had to get some of Dave's weights that he uses to exercise to hold the garage door down so it wouldn't blow open. We started driving to work and our car was blowing all over the place. We were pretty worried.

As we started driving down highway 89, we realized how bad this windstorm was. We saw the shingles from people's roofs flying off in chunks. We saw mangled trampolines stuck in tree tops. We saw power lines snap and burst into flames. We saw semi trucks tipped over sideways (we saw 7 of them on our way in). We saw HUGE trees uprooted everywhere. We saw signs and billboards just ripped to shreds. We saw debris flying EVERYWHERE and getting stuck in everything. We literally felt like we were in a destruction movie - you know, like the end of the world movies where everything is falling apart. It was unreal.

One of the craziest things was that when I got to work in Sandy, there wasn't even a breeze. NOT EVEN A BREEZE! All of the schools in Davis county were canceled because they had no power, and in Sandy everything was unscathed. It was crazy. Dave picked me up from work later that day and we headed home. We were pretty worried about our house because of all of the things we saw driving into work. We were anxious to get back and see if we still even had a house, or if it had blown away with everything else in the storm. When we got back to our house, we saw that it was okay and pretty much everything was still infact, but we still had no power. Our house was SO cold. There was no way we could sleep there because we had no idea what time the power would come back on. So...we grabbed all of our things and headed to my mom's house to spend the night (luckily she had power).

When we were finally back at our house the next day our power was back on. We found out from our neighbors that our power had been out for 36 hours. 36 hours!!

The whole thing made us wonder if this was a sign that we weren't supposed to buy a house. Nothing says welcome to homeownership like a hurricane! Luckily, our house wasn't damaged at all, and we are so grateful for that. Next time we will take these wind warnings a little more seriously!
